DTV giving back. Career Insight Day: Inspiring the next generation

At DTV, we are always looking for opportunities to volunteer, give back and get involved with charities. In recent years, some of us have been volunteering our time with My Big Career – providing career coaching sessions and supporting students on A-level results day.

My Big Career is a non-profit organisation working with schools to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

After a successful Insight Day with My Big Career and a group of secondary school students in 2022, we were keen to hold another one this year. A group of Year 12 students from Cardinal Pole Catholic School were invited into our London office for a day.

Our CEO Peter addressing the students.

The day began with introductions to My Big Career and DTV; who we are, our values and what we do, as well as a tour of Holborn Studios and our DTV London office which the students enjoyed.

To get a feel for DTV, staff across our departments hosted a career carousel, each of us giving a brief 5-minute chat about our jobs and what we enjoy about DTV.  The students also had the opportunity to ask us any questions they had about our job. I gave some insight into my role as a Digital Designer in the creative department.

The students were then given two briefs, based on the types of projects we work on with our clients. One was for Cats Protection and one for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

We led with a bird-naming game, which was a fun way to decide on which teams would work on which client brief. Then the students broke into teams to come up with a pitch. Each team would pitch their ideas to a panel of DTV staff members. We answered any questions about the briefs and supported the students as they prepared.

The students did an amazing job. There were so many highlights and compliments the judges were able to pull out of their pitches in the feedback session. The students also fed back that they built their confidence through the activity.

The Insight Day gave students a bigger picture of the variety of careers available to them. It was a great opportunity to show that you can make a career doing what you’re passionate about and you can work on projects and campaigns for the greater good.

Feedback from Cardinal Pole School staff & students

It was great to see the energy levels and involvement of the students increasing as the day progressed.
I appreciate the staff spending time away from their work and jobs to help us young kids understand more about the working world. It was really fun to be around the place and speak with the staff members.
It was absolutely perfect - it gave me confidence with public speaking.
Everyone was friendly and inclusive - thank you for your time.
